Hyundai Confirms 2024 Kona Electric Powertrains, Promises More Performance And Range

The 2024 Hyundai Kona is continuing its systematic tease campaign, with Hyundai choosing to share some new details about the 2024 Kona Electric, including performance, range, and more, ahead of the 2024 Kona’s arrival on our shores later this year.

Kona Electric Gets Class-Leading Range, But U.S. Figures Unknown

Hyundai’s announcement confirmed that the 2024 Kona Electric would get the best range figure in its segment.

The one catch here is that Hyundai didn’t reveal U.S. figures and instead opted to reveal figures the SUV got under the WTLP measurement system used in international markets.

While that means we get to wait a bit for U.S> figures, Hyundai did confirm that the new model will get a slightly bigger 65.4 kWh battery pack and a beefier front-mounted electric motor that Hyundai says makes an estimated 218 horsepower.

Hyundai claims that the Kona EV can now get 420 km of range between charges when measured under the WTLP standard. Look for that to translate to about 304 miles though we will have to wait for Hyundai to confirm things later.

The battery and range figures would be a noticeable bump upward from the outgoing model, which had a maximum driving range of 258 miles before it needed to stop to recharge.

The 2024 Kona Electric was also designed from the beginning to be an electric vehicle versus the outgoing model, which used the ICE model’s platform and key components to create it.

This shift in structure allowed the interior to benefit the most from the updates, with passengers benefitting from a completely flat floor which helps enhance legroom and overall comfort.

The Kona will also offer a fully digital 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a mirroring infotainment screen, which is what we have seen prior in the Ioniq 5 and 6 models. Buyers looking for gasoline-powered performance will be pleased to hear that the Kona will still offer ICE versions but Hyundai will reveal formal performance figures for those models in the future.

When Can I Buy One?

The 2024 Hyundai Kona is slated to go on sale later this year. While Hyundai didn’t have the Kona on display at the Chicago Auto Show, there is a chance that the model could make an appearance at the New York Auto Show later this spring which would correspond with the preliminary timeline that Hyundai has for the launch of the 2024 Kona.
